Legendary do Leipzig

I was invited over to Legendary Wargames Leipzig game for the final day of gaming.

The guys had already played two full days so this would be the end game and every was keen to finish whatever they had already started. I had the army of the North with Prussians, Russians and Swedes which in the end played no real part in the game so most of this is just eye candy for you rather than a game report. I had no idea what was going on!

I don't really game large scale Napoleonic (Heresy I hear you cry!) and whilst I am of course aware of Leipzig as immensley historically important I have never really read much on the subject. I imagine that better blow by blow accounts will be found elsewhere. For now please enjoy the pictures.

Over 15,000 28mm figures from the fabulous collection of Chris Flowers on the lovely terrain of Legendary Wargames played in their dedicated war room in Bronte Country West Yorkshire. Whats not to like.

I decided to park at the end of the drive but as it turned out there was plenty of parking left.  First dry day for a while so views were fabulous.

The view on entering the room is even more stunning though, wow, where to start?

My first job was to get the cavalry deployed, Move one the Prussians, then the Russians before finally the Swedes arrived.

The Bernadotte Swedish command base never made it on table, the Swedish foot only being available for the last move so a bit pointless getting them out of the box. Never mind its lovely so I got a picture.

So with the Cavalry for the Northern Army on we break for lunch.
The weather was nice enough for us to sit with a view of the Moors having our pork pies and sausage rolls.
Back to my sector I have about 3 feet of enemy to engage with horse, foot, guns and a fortified village. At the moment I have horse and nothing else so not much to do really. All entirely historical.
These lovely lancers are the only thing my side of the river so we advance the Russians towards them and they sensibly fall back behind their foot and guns lining the river.

As the Swedes are the only cavalry with guns attached I try to push these through the serried ranks of Prussian and Russian horse so they can start to fire upon the village.
Also supporting the Swedes is a British Rocket Battery which I push forward with a double move.
The Swedes are very colourful but have nothing to do.

Andy throws Polish skirmishers out of the village to annoy me.
I respond with a rash Cossack charge on the Poles. It keeps me busy but no doubt the Polish artillery are rubbing their hands together.

With not much happening my end and huge melees being fought across the rest of the table I decided to do a quick wander around and get some pictures. Again no idea at all whats happening and every one is properly wrapped up in their game.
In the southern sector the French have spotted a weakness and counter attacked the army of Silesia led by Ian, you can just see his cavalry retreating and French moving into the gap.

Back in my corner I launch my Cossacks at the Polish horse and guns to keep me entertained.

The results are fairly predictable but at least we got to move some figures.
The Cossacks are destroyed by artillery and a volley from the village whilst their compatriots come close to beating the Polish horse but no cigar.

My guns deploy and fire once upon the village but its the last go so as much as I can achieve for the day.

What a fabulous spectacle. The guys that stayed over and fought the full game have had a brilliant time. The French have a corridor to break out in the south and guys fall tot talking through the various merits of the game and who did well where. A future game will cover the Southern sector in isolation to see how much of the French army can escape.

The Legendary boys intend to play this again in the near future for their customers, I imagine there is more information on their website here: Legendary Wargames – Wargaming Holidays in Yorkshire

Thanks very much everyone.

    1. It was one of those that takes a bit of time to sink in when you walk through the door, very impressive.

  2. Bothe the countryside and game look fantastic but must have been a somewhat frustrating experience for you, with no real part to play in the game?

    1. I had only ever planned to turn up late, eat some food and socialise, so no biggie thats what I ended up doing. If I had been a paying customer the Legendary boys would have made sure I got a proper game.

  3. Leipzig is an incredible battle; to do in 28mm was ambitious. Such a fine result. As the owner of a Swedish contingent, nice to see the units on tables, even without a real attack on or with.
