Swedish Regiment Vastmanland

So with the basing department home again for a couple of days we were able to get another unit of Swedes completed.

These are the Vastmanland Regiment.

For this unit I have mainly used Wargames Foundry figures, these may be old and slightly small but I love these figures in their cold weather gear. I added in a small number of Warfare Swedes for command and to add a little variety, as they are a lot taller I put a little plasticard under the foundry figures to heighten them a little. I quite like the end result.

In the above picture you can see the Warfare Seargent in cold weather gear waving his men on.

And here the officer stands out  little from the Foundry pike.

The Warfare drummer is a lovely characterful figure and I like adding the Gabion to this base. Thank you to the basing department for the addition of a small headline which looks quite pretty!

Vastmanland is another unit that fought at nearly all the major engagements from Narva, through Poland and into the Ukraine, being destroyed amongst the Russian redoubts at the battle of Poltava.

Not quite sure the lighting does them justice in these pictures, I blame the photographer.

Workbench update

I managed to finish a few things that has been on the workbench for a while today and spray up the varnish as the sun was shining. All need basing so waiting on the basing department to come home for a weekend.

First lot are Russian Civila War Cavalry to finish off some units for my forthcoming game/

Secondly is my finished Saxon foot, these are the Saxon Guard and mainly Plastics with the Commander from Ebor. More on this when they are based up.

Next are Polish Light Cavalry, I will be using these as Charles of Sweden's Valaks. Again more on these once they are based.

The two pictures of both units together to get a feel for the how they look form a distance, not too shabby if I say so myself.

Wokbench

So to make up for only one post in 3 weeks I thought I would share what has been keeping me busy.

First two of my next Swedish battalion. I will be picking up the rest of this unit along with 4 others tomorrow at York.

2 El Cid Christians, got loads of these to paint first couple I have done for nearly a year.

Russian Civil War Red Cavalry, with a game coming up I am trying to get a few more figures finished for this period.

Sikh Wars British Sepoy and Sikh matchlockman, this is part of a long term project and I keep adding the odd figure in the hope I will surprise myself with a finished unit some time later this year!

4 more figures for Russian Civil War. This time Polish Lancers of the Russian Imperial Guard. Particularly like these and they are very useful as they fought for the whites for a year before marching back to Poland to fight the Reds again as part of the Polish army.

Lastly a base for my Saxon Guard foot, I hope to have a brigade of guards for the Saxons and this first battalion is about half painted now, this will be made up of mainly Wargames Factory musketeers with Ebor command figures.

Visiting the York Vapnartak show tomorrow and meeting Nick from Ebor to pick up 5 battalions of Swedish foot and 2 guns and crews.

May do a quick write up on the figures once I have had a sift through them.

Saxon Dragoons

Apologies for the gap in posts, the basing departments departure for University, work and a forthcoming Russian Civil War game have all conspired to slow my progress on the Great Northern War project.

The Der Goltz Dragoons fought at both Fraustadt and Kliszow before their commander and therefore name changed. The below schematic has them in black faces which is a nice cheat for me given that I prime in black

The photography I am afraid is not the best as I have been unable to get time to photograph them in natural light.

These are the first unit I have done using entirely plastic figures, they are wargames factory and quite nice, if a little slim. I don't think they stand the comparison to metals as well as the foot figures unfortunately but they are still nice.

These next two pictures show the depth of the bases quite well which I hope will protect these rather more delicate figures from the fat fingers of my fellow wargamers.

A bit of a close up of the command below the flag is Warfare Miniatures.

And a last view from above of the whole unit.

I have a couple more units of Swedes completed now but basing may have to wait.

I also have 6 of my 9 man Polish Valak unit complete so this should not be far off.

I am looking forward to the Vapnartak show at York Race course this weekend, I am meeting Nick from Ebor and picking up 5 battalions of Swedish foot and a pair of guns which is quite exciting. I may do a preview of the figures soon once I have had a good look at them all.

Thanks for reading.
