Last of the Mounted Cossacks

So I was going to wait until the weekend to load this but couldn't wait.  This is the last of my four regiments of Ukranian Cossacks for the Great Northern War. I have been really pleased with these, the Foundry figures are full of character and the TAG figures complement them very well indeed.


The TAG figure here is the bare chested guy on the left of the picture.

 

 These Cossacks are really useful as they can be used as Irregular Russian Cossacks, Polish or Ukranian Cossacks fighting alongside the Saxons, Poles, Russians or Swedes as you like. To start with I may need to use these to bolster my Swedish Army as it is far outnumbered by my colleagues collecting the Danish and Russian Armies for the period.

Below is the completed Brigade of mounted Cossacks complete with Hetman in the last picture.

 

 

 

 

So that is all the painted units based up and loaded to the blog, my stomach injury leaves me painting very little at present so my next post will be around the next planned units and the small number of figures I already have painted for these.

GNW Swedish Upplands Tremanning Regiment

I dropped the basing department back off at University this morning in not so sunny York and picked up the latest units finished. For the first time I had nothing completed myself to leave her with due to my lack of painting over the last couple of weeks.


We will come back to the Cossacks but for now I have my latest unit of Swedes to share.


Below is the Upplands Tremanning Regiment. Most Swedish regiments were raised on a regional basis with each large farm or small village being expected to provide two men to their local regiment. These men would spend a good part of the year still working the land but enough time each year training that the country could raise a well trained army quickly without any huge economic impact (at least in the short term). This typically provided two battalions per region.


A Tremanning regiment was a "third man" regiment raised by calling up more men from each farm and village, later int he war the Swedes resorted to Femanning Regiments, using up the fourth man on any farm or village.


In the early part of the war many of these had grey coats rather than blue and I have chosen to represent the Upplands troops in this earlier war uniform.

I do like the grey uniforms and the difference this makes to the blue from the rest of the army. The yellow and blue also adds a splash of colour. The Tremanning units saw a lot of action, there were Tremanning units at all the major actions, during the invasions of Scania by the Danes the army was almost exclusively Tremanning and Femanning regiments.


I will be posting my fourth Cossack regiment later in the week with a couple of shots of the whole brigade.

More Cossacks

Hi, last of the latest figures back from the basing department is my third unit of Cossacks. One more to come next weekend and that's the Cossack brigade complete (Horse wise anyway)

These are again mainly Foundry figures but also two TAG figures and one unknown donated by chum Jerry. Apologies the photography isn't the greatest.

 Above the figure on the left of the picture with pistol is TAG and below the front figure is also.

 Last picture is a sneak peak of my redoubt which will feature in the next game, need something to stop those sneaky Cossack foot running away.

Nothing coming off the painting table at the moment I am afraid as my stomach problem has resurfaced after too much painting. Couple of units to come from the basing department next week and then we may have a slight quite period so apologies.

GNW Guns and Generals

So second of the posts from my recent delivery of figures by the basing department and we have some smaller projects to share.


The first of these is my third Saxon Gun and Crew, this time a field piece. I do like the black painted guns with yellow metal work. This gives me a Positional Gun, a light gun and a field gun. Probably plenty for the two Brigades I plan, but dont hold me to that! Figures and gun by Ebor Miniatures.

 We then have another Swedish General, this is the third of the Ebor Swedish Generals and probably my favourite.

 Lastly a Saxon General, this is one of the old foundry range but is still a realty nice figure. I think the horse has aged particularly well.

Next I have a regiment of mounted Cossacks, probably drop a post on these at the weekend.

Bronze Age SAGA at Vapnartak York

Hi all, today we put our demo game on at Vapnartak. It was a roaring success and we had a lot of interest, so much so that in 6 hours we only got one game completed.


I think the game looked pretty good and was really pleased with the final outcome. A good show all round, with some lovely games, really liked the Kut WW1 game.

So to set the scene above is the full 6x4 table with our handouts and battle boards. Chris had also printed some nice pictures and framed them as a backdrop.




Below are the shots we got of the game, a lot were washed out as we got a lovely spot over looking the race course which had a lot of natural light.

We intend to put the battleboards and rule amendments onto the ELMS East Leeds web site as soon as we can, so anyone interested we will let you know when.


All in all a great day and met some nice folk. No long write up I hope the pictures speak for themselves.
