More Poles

With a third unit of foot painted I have also started to mix in some horse and guns. Still lots to do so good to make a start here.

These two Uhlans in the 1919 uniform are the start of a second squadron for an already existing unit of Poles. Just enough colour with the touches of yellow. The riders are, I believe, old Renegade WW1 Germans with Studio Siberia heads on Mutineer miniatures horses. I am not a fan of the renegade horses particularly but may use the odd one.

This horseman kicks off my second unit of Legion cavalry. The Trooper is Studio miniatures, not sure where his fine mount is from.
This gun crew are in French Uniforms, part of Hallers "Blue Army" and will get a suitable French gun shortly, probably a French 75mm.
Next up an officer in French Horizon Blue to lead more of the French Uniformed Poles. This one I like and may be my second battalion commander.
I have also started the German Uniformed Poles, a few different images and conflicting uniform plates but the majority agree on a greenish/grey jacket with some red piping and red and white collar tabs. I have settled on this uniform, I have left some figures with German caps but will add more with Polish square topped caps. I have gone with different ammounts of piping on different figures and given some Polish arm bands and not others to keep them a bit of a mix.
There are a mix of manufacturers, these 4 are Renegade and I have enough of these to make a pretty complete battalion, I will just need to add officers.
These are Great War and probably my favourites, I have quite a few command figures so some these will be mixed into the Renegade figures and others used as artillery spotters, enough of the line troops for the better part of a battalion.
These last three are, left to right, battle honours, Artizan officer and a Copplestone White Russian with a German head.
I am adding photos into this post as I finish figures, a bunch more the Poles in German Uniform here again a mix of Renegade and Great War.
The left two riflemen are Renegade whilst the sub machine gunner and right hand figure are Great War.
These command figures are all Great War, the chap in the great coat, slightly out of focus, will be a battalion commander.
And a bunch more Kingdom of Poland Poles in German uniforms. Getting me reasonably close to a battalion of these painted, including some Plastic troops.
Of the four Great War Miniatures I like the officer in glasses best.
4 of these 5 Renegade figures have head swaps, the left is a Scheltrum Polish cap the other three Studio Siberia which I prefer. I could do with more of these but I dont have huge numbers of them left.
Lastly two plastic Wargames Atlantic plastic figures, I bought a sprue of these, you can see on the left hand figure my modelling is not great but these are quite lovely figures if slightly brittle so will mix in well.
Lots more to do but good progress and wont be long before we can get these on table.

Thanks for stopping by.

Second Sikh Wars playtest

Hot off the game last week we decided to put our alterations straight in and go again, all well and good if you remember to take the British with you!

I left a box of Company foot at home so we only had 2 battalions. So apologies everyone, 4 battalions of Sikhs were pressed into service as Sepoys.

So the Khalsa forces were one brigade of 2 regular cavalry another of 4 regular infantry, then 3 tribal foot and finally 2 native irregular foot in an earthwork, the Sikhs were supported by 3 guns and 2 camel guns.

The "British" had 2 brigades of foot each with a Queens regiment and 2 Sepoy battalions, they also had two regiments of Horse 1 European Lancers the other Governor Generals Bodyguard. Lastly a brigade of 2 irregular infantry battalions, also supported by 3 guns.

Chris decided that he would put the cat amongst the pidgeons and throw his tribal infantry and the British allied irregular matchlocks and try distract Steve form his main objectives.
Next he started his cavalry forward to try keep the British cavalry from impacting the game
Meanwhile his regulars start to form a defensive square on the flank of the redoubt to stop the British flanking it. All the while scoffing at my suggestion of forming a triangle as the Sikhs did at Aliwal :-) .
The camel guns deploy on the flank of the tribal irregulars to harras the British foot.
Undaunted the British line advances all across the front.

With the first British brigade advancing on the earthwork the second  on is free to wheel intot he flank of the irregulars in preparation for supporting volleys into the tribal troops.

The Tribal units start to take casualties but press on regardless.
The Matchlockment volley the Tribal irregulars as they charge in but are unable to stop them closing.
A bids eye view of the fighting shows the outnumbered Tribal irregulars doign all the fighting and starting to feel the consequences of that.
The commander of the Sikh regulars is happy to finish off his hollow square and wait for the British next move. Whilst trained to drill int eh European manner by ex French Napoleonic officers the Sikhs were slow to manouvre in comparison to the British regulars.
The Tribal irregulars facing the Mathclockmen manage another round of melee before failing their moral after losing a base and being forced to pull back.

One unit of tribal foot charges the horse gun, whilst the gun only fights with a single dice and the Tribal irregulars with 6 the Tribals are unable to inflict any casualties on the gun crew.
The British first brigade stops at effective range and exchanges a number of volleys with the Sikh Matchlockmen. Pretty ineffectual, unfortunately though they fail their order to charge the breastworks and must remain where they are.
The SIkh Dragoons move forward to support the Currassier charge into the lancers.
The other unit of tribal foot is down to 2 bases and pretty ineffectual at this point.
The Sepoy battalion wheels into the flank of the Tribal irregulars and they quickly break saving the horse guns.
Not surprisingly the Tribal troops are driven off with heavy losses.
The British lancers have taken terrible casualties but fight on holding off the Sikh Currassier. It is this engagement in particular that has me thinking about the quality of the British troops in Melee and how we can enhance that. I decide that from next time troops will have a dice per base plus double their quality, so better troops have a much bigger advantage.

Another decent game, played quite well but also showed that we perhaps need to change things slightly on firing and combat as units took too long for casualties to build up.

Another game soon with more amendments included.

Another Battallion of Completed Poles 1919

My third battalion of Poles for the Russo-Polish War are completed and based.

This unit is wearing the 1919 uniform, the pre-curser of the uniform worn by the Poles during early WW2. Most Poles were still wearing Uniforms issued by the armed forces of their origin armies, so this uniform was often issued to the newly raised volunteer regiments.

As with other units this is 4 companies of 8. The MG has already been completed and included in an earlier post.

A mix of manufacturers mainly Woodbine Miniatures from Gripping Beast.

The below company has 7 Gripping Beast troopers, a Studio Siberia Officer and a couple of Studio Siberia Polish caps.
With this unit 5 Woodbine and two Studio Siberia on the right hand base, the chap at the back and the one on the right with the Grenade, again a couple of Studio Siberia Caps keep the Polish theme.

The command base is all Studio Siberia and very nice with a flag from Flags the lads, no longer available I believe.
The gun and crew again Woodbine with a couple of Siberia heads. This isnt a battalion gun I just did it at the same time and gives me two now.
Another Woodbine figures company with just one Siberia head at the back of the right hand base. I do like the bare head and bandaged head options from Woodbine.
Lastly this company are mainly Studio  Siberia with appropriate heads, the very left hand figure is actually a Wargames Atlantic German trooper with a French helmeted head and the officer is from Woodbine.
Pretty pleased with how these came out, German (Greater Poland) uniforms next up I think and getting closer to a game with them.

A few more close up pictures to give you a better feel for these lovely figures.
